I’ve been using my Roomba for nearly a year now, and I usually start my cleaning sessions through the app.
While I’ve occasionally used the clean button on the vacuum, it has always worked perfectly when I did.
However, a few days ago, I faced an issue while trying to start a cleaning session using the button – it didn’t respond.
I was unsure why this was happening. The vacuum is relatively new, so why was it encountering issues like this especially when the button was hardly used?
Naturally, I started looking for solutions to fix the problem. I didn’t want to claim the warranty right away.
If the Roomba clean button is not working, restart the Roomba by pressing the home button for 20 seconds. If this does not solve the issue, power cycle the Roomba by removing the batteries from the device for a few seconds. Replace them and then charge the Roomba.
Restart The Roomba To Get Rid Of Any Software Glitches
To restart your Roomba, normally you have to press the clean button for 20 seconds, however, since the button is not working properly, you will have to use the app to restart your vacuum.
Open the app, navigate to Product Settings, then select your Roomba and tap on Reboot Roomba
Now, try starting a cleaning session by pressing the cleaning button, if it still doesn’t work, power cycle the Roomba.

Power Cycle The Roomba To Drain All The Residual Power
Power cycling is an effective way to clear temporary software glitches and bring your Roomba back to its optimal performance.
If the clean button is not working properly due to a software glitch, this should solve it. Here’s how you can power cycle your Roomba:
- Before you begin, make sure your Roomba is turned off and not in the middle of a cleaning cycle.
- Flip the Roomba over to access the battery compartment. Depending on your Roomba model, you may need to remove a backplate or access the battery directly. Carefully take out the battery from its compartment.
- Wait for about 20-30 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Place the battery back into its compartment. Ensure that it fits securely and makes a proper connection.
- Once the battery is back in place, flip the Roomba over and set it on the floor. Turn on the Roomba using the power button.
- The Roomba will go through its startup process, and you may hear beeps as it initializes.
After the power cycle, try running a cleaning session using the clean button. If it still doesn’t work, try cleaning the electrical contacts and the Roomba sensors.
Clean Roomba Electrical Contacts, Sensors, and Filters
If the power cycling and resetting do not fix the Roomba clean button issue, try cleaning the vacuum through and through.
There is a chance that debris or dust can be hindering the functionality of the button. Here’s what you can do:
Clean the Electrical Contacts
Dust and debris can hinder your Roomba from charging properly. Carefully turn your Roomba upside down and wipe the charging contacts with a damp melamine foam or a dry cloth. Be gentle with cleaning to avoid damage.
Clean the Sensors
The sensors on your Roomba are usually located around the front bumper and underneath the device. They may appear as small, round, or oval-shaped components.
Gently wipe the sensors with a soft, dry cloth. This will remove any dust, dirt, or smudges that may be obstructing the sensor’s functionality.
Do not use any liquid cleaners or water directly on the sensors. Water or other liquids may damage the sensitive electronic components of the sensors.
Clean the Filters
The dustbin is the compartment that collects dirt and debris during cleaning. Find the release button or latch to open the dustbin.
Once the dustbin is open, you will see the filter inside. Depending on your Roomba model, the filter may be a replaceable filter or a washable one. In either case, carefully remove the filter from the dustbin.
If the filter is a washable one, gently tap it against a trash can to remove loose debris. Use a soft brush or your fingers to brush off any remaining dirt and dust.
After washing, shake off excess water and allow the filter to air dry completely. Make sure the filter is completely dry before reinserting it into the Roomba.
For non-washable filters, you will have to replace them.
Clean Other Parts
Disassemble parts like the side sweeper, front wheel, and brush to deep clean them. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment for effective cleaning.
If Nothing Works, Contact Customer Care
If none of the above methods seem to work, contact iRobot customer support.
Make sure you specify the correct brand number and model. Then, explain the issue in detail.
They will most likely schedule a maintenance appointment with you and replace the Roomba if you have received a faulty device.
Even though you can start cleaning sessions using the app, the clean button is needed for several functions including changing the clean mode and fixing the Roomba’s Error 38.
